Warming Your Cockles

With the cost-of-living crisis looming we can’t help but think of those things that easily bring comfort. Cosy jumpers, a crackling fire, and a cup of tea.

In Britain the ‘cuppa’ was the backbone of society. When anything bad happened someone would say “sit yourself down, I’ll make you a cup of tea.”

The term to warm the cockles of your heart means to bestow a feeling of contentment, to kindle warm feelings in a person, especially of happiness and felicity. How better to do that than with a cup of tea.

In China herbal teas were prescribed medicinally, and as the world has become more well-being conscious, we have taken to drinking our herbs as a health tonic too.

But my Brave New Girl podcast guest this week Bethan Thomas realised that she could specifically help women with their health issues, using her tea science background.

She co-founded Hottea Muma and a hug in a mug was born.

HEALING HERBS

Find out how Bethan came to be a tea scientist and create her brand of women’s health teas.

BRAVE NEW GIRL podcast

My guest this week is Bethan Thomas a Tea Scientist & the first non-Chinese person to get a degree in Tea Science from the University in Fujian, China.

She worked as a tea buyer for some of the UK's biggest tea brands before co-founding HotTea Mama an award-winning tea company, making teas to support better periods, pregnancy, motherhood & menopause, from gut health to hormonal balance.

Bethan's business survived and thrived through the pandemic, post-pandemic and now with cost-of living crisis because tea is an affordable comfort for people.

Even though her teas are on the more expensive end, they are herbal and have some medicinal properties so you could say they are a more affordable than food based supplements, though comparable in what they offer.

Hot Tea Mama came about because of  the problems women face at different stages of life in terms of gut health and hormonal balance.

With Bethan's tea science background she was able to create the right blends of tea to suits different women's health issues.

Thanks so much Bethan for creating a hug in a mug that puts women’s wellness and health at the heart of the teas you create. As a post-menopausal woman I certainly enjoy the tea that you created for the likes of me.

Thanks also for showing us how we can take our passion and turn it into a purposeful pursuit for the good of others.
