Courage to step forward.

Patsy Richardson's Definition of Courage & using Resilience to Grow.

Every week I ask my Brave New Girls podcast guest how they define courage. Courage is a powerful trait that enables individuals to face life’s uncertainties and challenges. Patsy Richardson, founder of The Greenhouse Therapy Rooms, has a unique perspective on what it means to be courageous. She defines courage as:

"the wherewithal and the resilience to step forward to grow.""

After a life-altering kidney failure and a successful corporate career, she redefined her path, creating a space designed to nurture mental health to help people heal and grow.

She believes courage is about making the conscious choice to step forward into growth, rather than retreating into perceived safety. It's easy to stay within the familiar, to avoid change, and to remain in situations that feel secure. But, according to Patsy, true courage is about facing the discomfort of the unknown and pushing through in pursuit of something better, even when the road is difficult.

Her personal experience of stepping away from the corporate world after a health crisis underlies her philosophy. She could have easily returned to a familiar, successful career. Instead, she chose to challenge herself, harness her creativity, and pursue a more meaningful venture. The creation of the Greenhouse Therapy Rooms reflects her courageous decision to step into a new field and build something that could positively impact others.

Patsy encourages us all to take courageous steps in our lives, particularly in the realm of mental health. Whether it's seeking therapy, sharing our struggles, or daring to make a life change, courage is essential for growth and self-understanding.

Dare to do things differently, for a happier, healthier life.

Ten Actionable Steps for Cultivating Courage:

  1. Acknowledge Fear: Identify what scares you and face it head-on.

  2. Take Small Steps: Break big challenges into manageable tasks.

  3. Seek Support: Talk to friends, therapists, or mentors.

  4. Practice Vulnerability: Open up about your struggles.

  5. Set Goals: Define your path forward and focus on growth.

  6. Embrace Uncertainty: Accept that the unknown is part of the journey.

  7. Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge every courageous action you take.

  8. Learn from Failure: View setbacks as opportunities to grow.

  9. Stay Committed: Courage is a practice, not a one-time act.

  10. Take Time for Reflection: Regularly assess how far you've come.

Patsy Richardson defines courage as stepping forward into growth despite fear and uncertainty, as she did in creating the Greenhouse Therapy Rooms.
