Courage to feel the feels.

Tapping into Courage: Lessons from Transformation Coach Riana Malia

Every week on Brave New Girls podcast, I ask my guest how they define courage. This week, it’s Riana Malia, and here is what courage means to her:

"I define courage as feeling what you're feeling, acknowledging what's there, and being afraid, but also leaning into that little flame or that spark in your heart or your gut, that this isn't it, that there is more that's meant for you in your life. This is not the end. Especially when you're in something that feels like, 'I don't know how I could ever pull myself out of this or come back from this.'

When you can lean in... a lot of times, people think it's a lack of resources that keeps them from being able to be courageous or move forward. So they think it's a lack of time, money, energy, or support, but really, it's often a lack of resourcefulness. And so tapping into that part of you—that's where your courage is. How do we figure it out? How do you get resourceful? And get what you need to move forward?

You don't have to know all the steps. You don't have to know what it's going to look like. In fact, being attached to the outcome sometimes stops us from starting in the first place. But just knowing in your heart that this is not it. This is not the end of your story. Leaning into that."

Riana’s powerful definition of courage is a reminder that bravery isn’t the absence of fear, but the willingness to act despite it. It’s about trusting that spark inside of you—your intuition—and allowing it to guide you when the path ahead feels uncertain. Whether you're stuck in a painful relationship, navigating a career shift, or simply trying to find joy again, courage often starts with the decision to move forward, even when you're unsure of the destination.

How Courage Can Change Your Life

Riana emphasizes that courage isn't about having endless resources like time or money. Instead, it's about resourcefulness: the ability to creatively use what you have to overcome obstacles. This mindset can be life-changing. When we stop waiting for the "perfect moment" or the "right tools" and start trusting ourselves, we unlock the potential for growth and transformation.

By leaning into courage, you can step out of self-doubt and into a life of clarity, confidence, and fulfillment. The first step is recognizing that your current circumstances are not your final destination. The second is taking action, no matter how small, to move toward the life you desire.

Ten Actionable Steps to Cultivate Courage

  1. Acknowledge Your Fear: Recognize that fear is a natural response to uncertainty. Accepting it helps you move forward.

  2. Tap Into Your Intuition: Listen to the inner voice telling you that there's more meant for you.

  3. Focus on Resourcefulness: Instead of lamenting what you lack, ask yourself, "What can I do with what I have right now?"

  4. Detach From Outcomes: Let go of needing to know every step of the journey. Trust the process.

  5. Take Small Steps: Break big goals into manageable actions. Courage grows with momentum.

  6. Reframe Setbacks: View failures as learning opportunities rather than reasons to stop.

  7. Seek Support: Surround yourself with people who encourage and uplift you.

  8. Celebrate Wins: Acknowledge even the smallest victories to build confidence.

  9. Practice Visualization: Imagine yourself succeeding. This primes your mind for achievement.

  10. Commit to Action: Courage thrives on action. Take one bold step today, no matter how small.

Courage is about embracing fear and uncertainty while trusting in the spark within you that says, "This is not the end." By tapping into resourcefulness and taking small, intentional steps, you can create a life that aligns with your heart's desires.
