Begin within.

Advocating for Positive Change: The Journey Begins Within

Advocating for positive change and supporting others is a vital aspect of personal growth. It builds on our experiences and expertise, creating a ripple effect of empowerment and progress. However, to effectively champion and support others, we must first lay a strong foundation within ourselves. This principle is akin to the safety instruction on an airplane: put on your oxygen mask first before assisting others. This means listening to our inner intuition, addressing our own needs, and upholding our values.

The Necessity of Self-Advocacy

Self-advocacy is the cornerstone of effective leadership and support for others. It involves recognizing our own needs and values, and taking action to fulfill them. This process requires us to be attuned to our inner voices and vulnerable parts that often get neglected. By addressing these vulnerabilities, we build a more resilient and authentic self, capable of offering genuine support to others.

Listening to Inner Intuition

Tuning into our inner intuition is essential for understanding our true needs and desires. This inner voice guides us toward actions and decisions that align with our core values. However, in our fast-paced, stress-filled lives, we often ignore this intuition, leading to burnout and dissatisfaction. To avoid this, we must take intentional time to reconnect with ourselves.

Creative Ways to Heal and Build Resilience

At Brave New Girls retreats and in my creative transformation workshops, we explore various creative methods to heal and build resilience. These methods include mindfulness practices, expressive arts, and reflective exercises that help participants tune into their inner selves. By engaging in these activities, we can address our vulnerabilities and strengthen our foundations.

Taking Time Out

To be of service to others, we need to ensure we are not operating at the edge of burnout. Taking time out to tune in and reconnect with what is important to us is crucial. This means setting aside dedicated time for self-care, reflection, and relaxation. Only then can we be truly present and effective in supporting others.

Ten Actionable Steps for Self-Advocacy and Growth

  1. Practice Mindfulness: Engage in daily mindfulness practices such as meditation or deep breathing exercises to center yourself and tune into your inner voice.

  2. Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries to protect your time and energy. Learn to say no when necessary to avoid overcommitting.

  3. Reflect Regularly: Set aside time each week for reflection. Journaling can be a powerful tool to process your thoughts and emotions.

  4. Engage in Creative Activities: Participate in creative activities such as painting, writing, or music to express and explore your inner self.

  5. Seek Professional Support: Consider therapy or coaching to address deeper issues and receive guidance on your personal growth journey.

  6. Prioritize Self-Care: Make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine. This can include physical activities, relaxation techniques, and hobbies.

  7. Connect with Nature: Spend time in nature to rejuvenate and gain perspective. Nature has a calming effect that can help you reconnect with your core values.

  8. Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with supportive and like-minded individuals who encourage your growth and self-advocacy.

  9. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to physical signs of stress or burnout and take appropriate actions to rest and recover.

  10. Celebrate Your Achievements: Acknowledge and celebrate your progress and achievements, no matter how small. This reinforces a positive self-image and motivates further growth.

Self-advocacy and inner healing are essential for effectively supporting and championing others. By listening to our inner intuition and addressing our own needs, we can build a strong foundation for personal growth and positive change.
