Engage with AI.
Ensuring Women's Influence in AI.
Recently at the Veuve Cliquot BOLD WOMAN awards, I listened to Pip Jamieson, founder of the Dots, discuss the gender imbalance in AI. Pip highlighted that AI was dreamt up by men and programmed by men. This makes it crucial for women to engage with AI and ensure it reflects a balanced perspective.
Pip emphasized the importance of women's influence and impact on AI. One way to achieve this is through podcasts. By interviewing women and using AI to help create blogs from these interviews, we can weave women's voices, views, and visions into the AI matrix. This approach helps ensure that AI represents 50% of the world's population.
Women podcasters and guests can use their content to influence how AI learns. The more we do this, the more we can shape AI to reflect women's stories, expertise, and experiences. Podcasts are a powerful medium. They capture nuanced conversations, personal anecdotes, and professional insights, all of which contribute to a richer and more diverse dataset for AI. When AI systems analyse these transcripts, they learn to recognise and build in to its learning, the complexities of women's perspectives, which are often underrepresented in traditional datasets.
In addition to podcasts, other digital content formats can play a crucial role. Videos, webinars, and live discussions featuring women can be transcribed and fed into AI systems. Online forums and social media platforms where women share their experiences and knowledge can also provide valuable data. By diversifying the sources from which AI learns, we can create a more balanced and inclusive AI.
It's essential to understand that the goal is not only to include more women’s voices but also to ensure that these voices are accurately represented and valued. Women need to be involved at every stage of AI development, from data collection and algorithm design to implementation and evaluation. This holistic approach ensures that the AI systems we build are fair, unbiased, and reflective of the diversity of human experience.
But how else can we achieve this? Can we still change the curve? Yes, we can. It requires concerted efforts from women, communities, and institutions. By encouraging environments that encourage and support women's participation in AI, we can make significant strides. This involves advocating for policies that promote gender diversity, creating mentorship programs, and providing resources and education to women interested in AI. It's about building a culture that values and seeks out women's contributions, ensuring they are not just included but central to the conversation.
That said, let’s make sure in co-developing AI that we get it to tasks that we’re not that bothered about doing ourselves. It’s useful for structuring blogs, books, documents etc but when it comes to your creativity and your unique voice and your in person experiences let’s keep it human.
Last weekend I co-hosted a Brave New Girls retreat in beautiful eco-friendly surrounding with nourishing food and nurturing activities designed to help people reconnect with themselves so that they could explore their inner creativity and child-like curiosity. It was an entirely human experience. Away from our phones, away from technology. All our senses entirely present in every moment, with ourselves and with each other.
Balancing being human and using AI as a means to an end is our big challenge for creating the future we want.

Ten Actionable Steps How We Can Shape AI with Women's Voices.
Podcast Interviews: Interview women from various fields and use AI to transcribe and analyse these conversations. This content can then be used to train AI models, ensuring women's perspectives are included.
Blog Creation: Use AI to convert podcast interviews into blog posts. These blogs can be shared widely, amplifying women's voices and ensuring they reach a broader audience.
Content Sharing: Share the content created from these interviews on social media and other platforms. This increases visibility and ensures that women's perspectives are part of the broader discourse.
Collaborative Projects: Engage in collaborative projects where women from different sectors come together to discuss AI and its implications. Use AI tools to document these discussions and create content from them.
Educational Programs: Develop educational programs that encourage women to engage with AI. Use AI to create and distribute learning materials, ensuring they are accessible to a wide audience.
Mentorship Programs: Establish mentorship programs where women leaders in AI mentor young women entering the field. Use AI to match mentors and mentees based on interests and goals.
Research and Publications: Conduct research on the impact of women's contributions to AI. Use AI tools to analyze data and publish findings, highlighting the importance of gender diversity in AI development.
Conferences and Workshops: Organize conferences and workshops focused on women in AI. Use AI to record and analyze the content from these events, creating resources that can be shared widely.
AI Development: Encourage women to participate in AI development projects. Provide resources and support to ensure their contributions are recognized and integrated into AI systems.
Advocacy and Policy: Advocate for policies that promote gender diversity in AI. Use AI tools to analyze the impact of these policies and ensure they are effective in promoting gender balance.
Pip Jamieson urges women to engage with AI, using podcasts and blogs to ensure their voices shape AI's development. But let’s also hold fast to our very human experiences too.
