Dare to be different.
Your unique path inspires change.
My guest this week is Sue Reed author of The Rewilding of Molly McFlynn. Set in rural Northumberland between the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic and 1649 Newcastle Witch Trials, this is a story of a girl who is rewilded both in ditching her addiction to restriction & dieting, and in finding the agency to be true to herself & live a more sustainable life.
Her book is a resonating narrative that delves into the life of Molly, a character crafted to explore poignant themes like bullying, body shaming, individuality, and alternative ways of living. The story, set against the backdrop of the first COVID-19 lockdown, begins with Molly, a 15-year-old, being sent to live with her bohemian grandparents in Northumberland. Initially resistant to the lifestyle changes, including foraging for food and limited Wi-Fi, Molly undergoes a transformative journey.
Molly's encounter with Martha, a girl from the 17th century fleeing witch hunts, serves as a catalyst for her personal growth. The historical reference to the 1649 witch hunts in Newcastle, where Martha's mother was executed, underlines the long-standing persecution of women perceived as different. This parallel drawn between past and present illustrates how women, like Molly and Martha, grapple with societal expectations and the repercussions of deviating from the norm.
Sue Reed's portrayal of Molly's transformation is multifaceted. Molly's journey of rewilding – embracing her natural appearance, engaging in gardening and sustainable living, and developing a deep connection with nature – symbolizes her breaking away from societal pressures. She learns to appreciate her grandparents' wisdom and lifestyle, which initially seemed archaic and irrelevant. This shift reflects a broader message about the importance of sustainability and a harmonious relationship with nature.
The conversation with Sue Reed also reveals her personal connection to the story. Drawing from her experiences and her relationship with her grandmother, Sue infuses authenticity into the narrative. Her background in education, especially working with children with learning disabilities, adds depth to her understanding of young people's struggles with identity and belonging.
Molly's story is not just about individual growth; it's a call to recognise and respect differences in others and ourselves. It challenges the reader to think about their own identity, the pressures to conform, and the courage it takes to carve one's path. The narrative underscores the significance of finding one's tribe while maintaining personal values and identity.
In a world where deviation from the norm can lead to "cancellation" or ostracism, Sue Reed's book serves as a reminder of the importance of community, empathy, and acceptance. It encourages young readers to embrace their uniqueness and contribute positively to the world, advocating for sustainable living and environmental consciousness.
