See the world slowly
We are, for sure, better for seeing the rest of the world with our own eyes, experiencing other cultures and traditions, mixing with other people, eating different food and lying under different skies.
We experience ourselves differently when we travel. And when we come home we are always a little changed. A little more hopeful and energised.
We are more expansive for knowing our fellow humans in our various habitats. Maybe we are less ‘othering’ when we have embraced the curiosity embedded in travel.
So it’s good that we travel.
It’s just that how we travel has gotten to be a burden on the planet with cheap flights playing a critical role.
But let’s not dwell on harmful travel, but turn back to what, not that long ago, was the norm: enjoying the journey as much as the destination.
My Brave New Girl podcast guest this week is Cat Jones, the founder of the B corp certified business Byway travel, a company that helps you see the world more slowly, and enables you to embrace the joys of flight-free travel.
MAKE IT MAGICAL
Cat entices us with a vision of travel that makes it feel magical again.
Cat and her company Byway are on a mission to make slow travel mainstream. They offer 100% flight free holidays by train, boat and bus - and the journey is the holiday just as much as the destination. Their holidays are multi stop, often multi modal, often including sleeper trains (or boats!) and are journeys optimised for enjoyment, instead of speed or cost.
Cat shows us how to travel in a more sustainable way, so we can still see the world and connect with other people and other cultures, without leaving such a huge carbon footprint.
With alternative ways to travel it helps us see and save the planet at the same time.
