Mind Health Benefits of Woodlands and Trees

Why are woods good for our mood?

Woodlands and trees have a profound impact on our mental health and well-being. Spending time in nature, particularly in forests, has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while promoting feelings of calm and rejuvenation. Research suggests that exposure to trees and natural environments can lower cortisol levels, improve mood, and even boost immune system function.

One of the most recognised benefits of woodlands is their ability to encourage mindfulness and relaxation. Forest bathing, or “Shinrin-yoku,” a Japanese practice of spending time in forests, has been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce heart rate, and improve overall emotional health. The quietude of forests, combined with the sounds of birds, rustling leaves, and the scent of wood and foliage, creates a soothing environment that helps calm the mind.

Trees, particularly evergreen varieties like pine and cedar, release phytoncides—natural oils that protect trees from harmful insects and bacteria. These phytoncides, when inhaled, are believed to boost human immune systems and promote a sense of well-being.

The Greenhouse Therapy Rooms, created by my Brave New Girls podcast guest Patsy Richardson, embody this woodland-inspired approach to well-being, bringing the tranquility of nature indoors to promote positive mind health and wellbeing.
