Transforming habits.

Finding Courage to Transform Our Lives with Sustainable Practices.

Every week I ask my Brave New Girls podcast guest how they define courage. This week my guest is Shila Wattamwar, founder of Sustainable Me! Her platform aims to make sustainability a part of everyday life. To do so takes courage.

"Really committing to something that takes effort."

This effort involves making personal changes that benefit the planet. Shila suggests starting small and focusing on areas that matter to you. For example, reducing meat consumption can significantly decrease your ecological footprint. Or cycling when you can. Or flying less. Small, consistent actions can lead to significant long-term benefits.

Shila encourages us to take personal responsibility and recognise our power in driving demand for sustainable products and services. By making conscious choices, we can influence companies to adopt more sustainable practices, creating a multiplier effect. She advocates for a balanced approach, encouraging incremental changes rather than overwhelming transformations.

Shila’s platform is a guide for our own lives. We can have the courage to change old habits and take on new ones that benefit ourselves, our families, and the world. This change starts with our mindset. We need to think about our impact and influence in a way that doesn't scare us or feel overwhelming.

Adopting a sustainable lifestyle can be simpler, less stressful, and cheaper. We can make life easier for ourselves while benefiting our community, environment, and global future. One key aspect of this transformation is recognizing that small changes can lead to significant impacts.

By breaking down the concept of sustainability into manageable steps, we can gradually incorporate these changes into our lives without feeling overwhelmed. For instance, starting with something as simple as reducing plastic use or choosing reusable items can set the stage for more substantial changes down the line.

We also need to shift our mindset from seeing these changes as sacrifices to viewing them as opportunities to improve our quality of life. Sustainable practices often lead to a healthier lifestyle, cost savings, and a sense of fulfilment from contributing positively to the world. When we focus on the benefits, the effort required to make these changes feels more worthwhile.

By staying informed about the impact of our actions and the alternatives available, we can make more conscious choices. Sharing this knowledge with others creates a ripple effect, encouraging more people to adopt sustainable practices. Engaging with like-minded individuals and participating in local sustainability initiatives can provide motivation and a sense of belonging. Together, we can amplify our impact and inspire broader societal change.

In essence, transforming our lifestyle to be more sustainable is about making thoughtful choices that align with our values and the well-being of the planet. It's about taking small, consistent steps that collectively make a big difference. We’re not just improving our lives but also paving the way for future generations. Let's take that first step with courage and commitment, knowing that each action we take brings us closer to a healthier, more sustainable world.
